After learning English for about long time –almost every time in my life actually – I know a little bit how to figure out this question “Why does everybody seem amazed to every people who is speaking English? He is only speaking anyway.” I mean, speaking English can be just the same as well as speaking our own nationality language. Moreover, native speakers who speak English well will be just said it is very normal of them speaking their language.
I will construct my opinion by starting with this such theory which I got from International Seminar for English Teacher or Student. “English as Lingua Franca” or you name “Global Language” classify into three groups. They are first speaker, second speaker, and foreign speaker. First speaker as well as native speaker will not totally get difficulties in speaking or other communication skill. Native speakers come from USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. They do know how to pronounce words because English is their mother language. On the other hand, second speaker is someone who make English as optional language when speaking. They will prefer speaking their own nationality language to English but at some special areas like education, politic, or business they will totally using English. Take examples, they are Malaysia, India, Philippine, Singapore, France, Spanish, and etc. They know English, they can speak English good enough with their own accent. Where is Indonesia categorized? Yep, Indonesians are English as foreign language learners. Every of us has different mother language. It can be Javanese, Sundanese, or even Malayans. Remember that Indonesia is a rich country. Additionally, Indonesia has one big nation language which is our beloved Bahasa Indonesia. So by these facts, we know that we are foreign language learners which the effort has to be harder. Indonesia is still lucky, comparing to Japan, Korea, China, or Thailand that have different alphabet. Their struggle is even bigger than Indonesian. Also, the very luckier if I have to tell the comparison, it is Jakartan who speak only Bahasa (well, I don’t say that some of them may speak Betawi) so that it means English for them is a second language.
The problem of second language learners is probably only about accent yet for foreign language learners are more much many. For example like the accent, the alphabet, and the environment. Yes, the environment doesn’t support us to make this global language become means of communication. Many Indonesians will be amazed if we speak English fluently. The matter is that we make English as skill. Every prestige jobs requires the job seeker to have good English skills which are speaking, listening, reading, and writing (well basically it happens to all languages frankly speaking). Moreover, every graduated Indonesian students requires English certificate. We learn English for purposing the goal of being good student or good employee in some companies.
Well, I don’t think that is bad idea yet it would be better if we make "English as Global language" which becomes real means of communication in Indonesia. We share and tell something in English naturally. Just forgetting our skill, grammar, and pronunciation since we make it only for embracing us to speak up our feeling and idea in English. No need to like full proper English, just mix and match sounds interesting. In the end, by functioning English as communication we will get the skill since we have been practicing a lot. Learning English becomes easier. Speaking English becomes natural, it is not something we should proud at because it doesn’t make for. We will end up to realize that learning grammar is important and obligatory, too. In the fact, we want to be understood while communicating so that there is no misunderstanding.
For me, considering English as second language which actually leveling up the use of English in daily life doesn’t mean that we don’t proud to speak our Bahasa or we are being less nationalistic or being ignored to what is happening in Indonesia. Absolutely, it is not true. We have to see globally, also in another word, we must have global perspective to solve Indonesia's problems. It is not an easy job if we just look at one point of view of us without giving attention to other parts of the world’s desire. See? “Global perspective without forgetting local values” in this such globalization era is very marvelous solution.
